"My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth." Abraham Lincoln
The eighth grade social studies curriculum consists of the following content area strands: American History, Geography, Economics and Civics. Primary content emphasis for this course pertains to the study of American history from the Exploration and Colonization period to the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War. Students will be exposed to the historical, geographic, political, economic, and sociological events which influenced the development of the United States and the resulting impact on world history. So that students can clearly see the relationship between cause and effect in historical events, students will have the opportunity to explore those fundamental ideas and events which occurred after Reconstruction
Students should be prepared to read and write both in and outside of the classroom. We will spend time reading, listening, discussing, analyzing, and writing about historical primary and secondary sources, which may include but are not limited to the following: print rich text, as well as pictures, charts, graphs, maps, cartoons, video, and music. Students will be expected to come prepared for class each day with homework complete. Students will have the opportunity to work with computers in the classroom whenever possible. Students will be expected to complete a research paper during third quarter, as well as projects throughout the school year both in and outside of class.
I am excited about this school year and all the opportunities for learning that lay ahead. My hope is that each student leaves my class with a better understanding of their history, and how we all play apart in creating and shaping the History of the United States. Through mutual respect, hard work, and I hope a little fun it will be a FANTASTIC school year!!!!
